Cindy McCall wanted only one thing—to be loved for herself rather than for Big Eddy McCall’s fortune.

Trace Rawlings never knew his father or his mother, but he had made a home for himself in the beautiful, treacherous cloud forests of Ecuador.

When Trace accepts a job guiding Cindy McCall safely through the wild forests, he believes he is being paid only for his local knowledge. Cindy believes she has hired Trace for his skill. Both are wrong.

When Big Eddy’s deception is revealed, Trace and Cindy have to fight to hold on to what they found deep in the cloud forest--the dark fire of love.

EL stories are for the most part pretty good. I've read a lot of them over the years. but not my fav. author...and here's why. same questions over and over "do you like that" "am I hurting you"..... and statements like, "he never wanted a woman like this before" ... EL needs to dig deeper and come up with some new lines. I skip over most of the sexual parts...just too boring (same old stuff over and over) ...or it's too funny to be believable. and sometimes spends way too much time on landscapes. 3 stars for the 2/3's of the book that's good.

Dark Fire edition by Elizabeth Lowell Romance eBooks Reviews

Unfortunately, I accidentally submitted the review for this book on Lover in the Rough, which was a much better book. They are both great books though...see my review on Lover in the Rough
This last only is my favorite and show a hard-headed man can be made to see he can follow his heart AND find his dreams. Whip and Shannon are strong wonderful characters. Lowell tells it like it should be. If you have a chance to find Autum Lover and Winter Fire by Lowell they tie into these.Hint has them paper or Ebook.Enjoy
This story is beautiful and Rafe (Whip) is so sweet. He sets out to woo Shannon with supplies and gifts. He takes care of her because she so obviously needs it even though she did her best to chase him off and refuse.I enjoyed Rafe's character in the previous two books and I continued to like him in this book. Rafe really put some effort into make sure Shannon was taking care of, had enough food, and would be comfortable. He also brightened up her day to day life with gifts that weren't necessary like jam, flowers, and pretty pebbles. He's just so sweet. There is some minor conflict as they both have different plans for what they want and they resist, at times, their mutual attraction.
I'm an avid Elizabeth Lowell fan, but this book was awful. There was no plot, no mystery, nothing except sex. I wasted my money on Dark Fir, To The Ends of the Earth and Chain Lightning.
I have been reading Lowell's books for over 20 years. I have my favorites, but all are good. My favorite thing about them is her accurate and evocative descriptions if the various landscapes. This story, as usual, kept my interest and made me want more.
This is not a new book and it shows, that being said, it IS interesting and is about interaction between two characters and their emotions and how their past experiences color everything they do. No it isn't a mystery, it's not a thriller, it's plain and simply a romance between two stubborn characters and it should just be enjoyed for that. Immersion Quotient 3 out of 5
I read the entire "Only" series by Elizabeth Lowell. This is the final book in the series (in order Only His, Only Mine, Only You, and Only Love). The first two books were fabulous, the third one was terrible, and this was good, but does not live up to the magic of "Only His" and "Only Mine."
We first met the hero, Rafael "Whip" Moran in the second and third books, and I was really looking forward to reading his story. He first sees the heroine, Shannon, in a general store and he comes to her rescue as she is being leered at by some dangerous and perverted Culpepper brothers. He is instantly drawn to her and cannot explain why. Whip has a bad case of wanderlust and is preparing himself to take off again for another jaunt around the world (he's only stayed in Colorado as long as he has because his little sister and brother have settled here). However, after meeting Shannon, he feels a duty to protect and care for her, and so he finds himself torn between his desire for "the sunset he hasn't seen" (a cheesy phrase that the hero keeps obsessing about throughout the entire novel) and his growing love for Shannon.
Shannon, too, is falling in love with him but also strongly desires her independence and resists Whip's efforts to take care of her. She is an altogether very likable heroine.
I think what kept frustrating me about this book - hence the four stars - was the fact that the hero keeps going on and on about how he can't stay in one place, and he needs the 'sunset he's never seen' and all that drivel, and the heroine keeps acting like she doesn't care if he sticks around or not, even though it's clear that she loves him and wants him to stick around. This was just one of those cases that you just wanted them to shut-up and be honest with themselves and with each other.
I did enjoy the revisiting of the other characters in the series. Plus, the end of this book gives a great epilogue of all of the characters and couples in the series.
NOTE The character "Hunter" that we see involved in the gun battle at the end of this book is a lead-in to two other books by Elizabeth Lowell - Autumn Lover and Winter Fire (both of which go together as a two-book series).
